I have to admit, I’m not a detail person. I’ve never been one to notice if my yard has been mowed or not. My brain is hard-wired to lose itself in a good book or in research. I’m constantly curious and learning.
It’s a quality that frustrated my mother when I was growing up. She’d be craving a compliment on her beautifully mowed lawn and I would be ever clueless. I simply never noticed a blade of grass in my life. My mother, on the other hand, could pick out the one blade half-an-acre away that the lawnmower missed.
As luck would have it, I landed a job working on a sod farm. Why? I’m pretty sure it’s because God has a sense of humor. Also, because I’m blessed. I’ve found the sweetest working family out on this farm, and I’m thankful for all the things I’ve learned in my time here. For example, all I now see when I’m driving past this or that lawn is the health and type of the grass. Yes, I’m now a person who notices grass, and I’ve found some interesting facts out about grass lately.
There are potential health benefits of walking barefoot on grass, shown in publications of many recent medical journals. Grounding, as it’s called by some, is great for heart health, the immune system, the endocrine system, and even those struggling with blood sugar and inflammatory issues. I first learned about the health benefits of being in touch with the earth … particularly thick, lush grass … when I read a book by Beni Johnson. On top of the physical benefits, just the color green alone has positive mental health benefits, as well. It’s calming, soothing and healing. Studies have shown those suffering from PTSD heal faster when immersed in a green-scape.
Grass, a gorgeous foundation for our dream homes and playgrounds, also has other benefits … from economical to agricultural. Evergreen Turf farm in Arizona lists four main benefits of having sod in your own yard:
- It reduces heat
- Controls erosion
- Absorbs Carbon Dioxide
- Reduces noise from traffic
Researching all of these interesting studies lately has prompted me to begin a new health journey this summer, and I’m so glad Sodmasters is a part of it. Sodmasters produces the healthiest and prettiest sod in the state. I love selling it to customers because I know I’m giving them the highest quality. We have sold quite a lot of sod lately, in thanks to our amazing customers! I think I’ll take a lunch break, kick my shoes off and go take a walk in one of the fields.
